Reporting to the Manager, the role of the Health Records Technician – Coder is to meet the needs and expectations of its customers in having complete and accurate coded and abstracted data readily available; to ensure inpatient and NACRS records are evaluated for completeness, accurately coded and abstracted for timely submission to C.I.H.I. ICD-10-CA, diagnosis codes and CCI, intervention and procedure codes are the clinical data classification systems. The Coder utilizes a computerized abstracting system 3M-HDM to collect coded clinical data and to generate routine data quality reports. Quality of data is key to the management and planning of Brightshores and to this extent reports must be run daily, monthly to ensure the accuracy of the data.
Qualifications / Skills / Abilities:
Required
- Graduate of a Health Records Technician/Health Information Management Program
- Certified member with Canadian College of Health Information Management (CCHIM)
- Current membership with the Canadian College of Health Information Management Association
- Extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, micro-biology, pharmacology, health records science and medical terminology (to be tested)
- Minimum 2 years of experience with DAD and NACRS
- Experience working at both large and small community hospitals
- Experience with CIHI ICD-10-CA/CCI coding/collection methodologies including CIHI Coding Standards, MOHLTC data collection standards and application of FOLIO
- Experience with data collection systems for abstracting
- Knowledgeable in the use of computers and hospital clinical information systems
- Ability to maintain workload productivity indicators/measurements
- Adherence to established data submission criteria/timelines as set by Department in order to meet and maintain MOHLTC data submission
- Knowledge and use of data quality techniques to ensure data classified and abstracted is correct according to established Brightshores, MOHLTC and CIHI standards prior to submission to CIHI
- Accurate key boarding/data entry speed of 50 wpm (to be tested)
- Ability to understand verbal and written instructions
- Accuracy and attention to detail, good organizational skills
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Ability to work all shifts, including weekends; ability for call and multi-site coverage when required
