The Nurse Practitioner (NP) Oncology will join a dynamic interprofessional team. Working within our growing oncology program, this individual will be responsible for direct patient care, as well as providing consultative service for comprehensive assessments and care planning for patients with a cancer diagnosis. Through clinical consultation, staff education and research, the NP will promote best practices in oncology care within the Oncology Clinic. The NP will demonstrate leadership in evidence based practice. The NP will participate in quality improvement and act as a mentor to nurses and other interprofessional colleagues.
The NP Oncology is a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class with the College of Nurses of Ontario, who provides comprehensive advanced practice nursing services including health promotion, disease and injury prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and support for adult in-patients under the care of the Oncology Program. The NP has advanced knowledge and decision-making skills, in providing a comprehensive health focused approach in meeting the health needs of this group of patients.
The NP provides patient care in accordance with legislative acts and frameworks guiding NP practice such as those from the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), the Regulated Health Professionals Act (RHPA), the Public Hospitals Act, the Nursing Act and established medical directives. The NP will demonstrate competency to autonomously diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform procedures within the RN (EC) legislated scope of practice and designated medical directives, as appropriate.
Skills/Abilities/Qualifications
Required
- Master’s Degree in Nursing
- Current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario as an RN (EC) – Nurse Practitioner-Primary Health Care (PHCNP) or Nurse Practitioner-Adult (NP-Adult)
- Minimum of 3 – 5 years of recent experience in the care of the adult medical and/or oncology/hematology population
- Completion of the de Souza Institute’s ‘Foundations in Oncology Nursing Practice’ course
- Completion of the de Souza Institute’s ‘Provincial Standardized Chemotherapy and Biotherapy’ course
- Completion of Learning Essentials Approach Palliative Care (LEAP) course
- Advanced clinical knowledge and implementation of evidence-based practice
- Superior interpersonal, coaching, and leadership skills
- Excellent decision making, problem recognition and problem solving skills
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, electronic medical record
- A strong desire and capacity to promote professional practice and excellence
- Recent satisfactory attendance and performance

Preferred
- Membership in the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario and/or Nurse Practitioner Association of Ontario
- Specialty certification in Oncology nursing through de Souza Institute or equivalent
