The Nurse Practitioner is a self-directed advance practice prepared nurse who functions in an expanded nursing role within an interprofessional practice model, in collaboration with the Meaford physician group.  She/he will report to the Program Manager of the Meaford hospital.

The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for working collaboratively with the interprofessional team to develop, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.  The NP will use advanced knowledge, skill, and judgement when providing care and will work to identify solutions for complex health-care issues for patients within the Acute In-Patient program as well as other areas within the hospital.

The Nurse Practitioner provides patient care in accordance with legislative acts and frameworks guiding Nurse Practitioner practice including those from the Brightshores hospital guidelines, policies and medical directives,  College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), the Regulated Health Professionals Act, 1991 (RHPA), the Public Hospitals Act, 1990 (PHA), the Nursing Act, 1991, and professional practice standards.  Within the scope of these acts and frameworks, the Nurse Practitioner will demonstrate competency to autonomously diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform procedures as appropriate.

Skills/Abilities/Qualifications

Required

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing required
  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class
  • Adult or Primary Health Care Specialty Certificate
  • Successful completion of College of Nurses of Ontario approved education to prescribe controlled substances
  • Current BLS certificate required
  • Current ACLS certificate required
  • Acute in-patient care experience an asset
  • Sound clinical background and strong health assessment and diagnostic skills.
  • Strong skillset in Palliative Approach to care, or willingness to train and build skillset
  • Advanced current knowledge of nursing theory, nursing philosophy, educational theory and Research
  • Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent leadership abilities and critical thinking
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Self-directed with demonstrated creativity, flexibility and initiative skills
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborative development of clinical service programs.
  • Knowledge and experience utilizing the principles of chronic disease self-management.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License and use of vehicle to travel
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed to accommodate patient and program needs
  • Recent satisfactory performance and attendance record

Preferred

  • Three (3) years or more related clinical experience in acute care
