WAGE RATE: $39.07 – $56.00

Reporting to the Manager, Medicine, the responsibility of the Clinical Scholar Registered Nurse is to mentor nurses in their transition into the nursing workforce. They are responsible for the promotion of health and the assessment of, the provision of care of, and the treatment of health conditions by supportive, preventative, therapeutic, palliative and rehabilitative means to medical patients in order to attain or maintain optimal function.

Clinical Scholars are experienced nurses with frontline experience who are employed in supernumerary positions to provide mentorship to newly graduated nurses to support their transition into the workforce. Types of new nurses include nursing graduates, internationally educated nurses (IENs) and nurses looking to upskill.

Qualifications/Skills/Abilities:

Required

  • Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Physical Assessment course
  • CC1 or equivalent
  • Current medical experience with a minimum of two years within the last five years
  • Oncology and palliative care nursing experience within the last 2 years
  • Experience in administration of chemotherapy drugs and management of side effects
  • Venipunctures to establish an IV required
  • IV medications below the drip chamber
  • Central line care – including tubing, dressing change ,line removal and blood sampling
  • Maintenance of TPN
  • Self-directed and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing population and patient needs
  • Leadership, Problem solving, decision making, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Interviewing and patient assessment skills
  • Interest and experience in patient education and health promotion
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and continuing education
  • Participate in staff meetings and unit specific projects
  • Availability to work day shifts during the week (8 and 12 hour)
  • Recent satisfactory performance and attendance records

Preferred

  • Baccalaureate Degree in nursing
  • BCLS certification
  • Additional education pertaining to palliative care and oncology
  • Broad medical experience preferred
  • Oncology Certificate
