Brightshores Health System is another step closer to redeveloping the Emergency and Laboratory departments in the Southampton Hospital. On October 15, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care granted Brightshores approval to tender the project.
Earlier in the year, Brightshores submitted pre-tender documents to the Ministry and responded to preliminary comments in August. Given the recent approval, Brightshores will now begin the multi-tiered tender and approval process.
“We were thrilled to receive the good news,” says Lance Thurston, Brightshores President & CEO. “The Ministry approval means that we can continue moving forward with this project, and we’re ready to do just that! This renovation will double the size of the Lab, triple the square-footage of the ER and will provide a modernized and well equipped area to manage the hospital’s patient care volumes.”
The new Emergency and Laboratory departments will be built to meet the latest Healthcare CSA Standards and Building Codes. The new layout focuses on the enhancement of patient services through improved waiting spaces and infection control, increased space for lab processing, decontamination and isolation and the improvement of patient and staff flow for operational efficiency.
The total project cost is estimated at $10 million. The government contributes 90% of the costs and 10% must be raised locally. We send our warmest thanks to all of those who have donated to The Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation in support of this project.
We anticipate that the tender will be publically advertised in November and we are aiming to have the successful tender approved in the New Year.
This project is scheduled to be completed by fall 2018. The Southampton Hospital and all services will remain open during all phases of the construction.
