Stroke Centre Team

The Owen Sound hospital is designated as the District Stroke Centre for this area and offers complete stroke care.  The video below provides an introduction to the health care team that works together to provide excellent stroke care from the moment a patient enters our Emergency Department, to their discharge back home or to another faciliy.

We offer patients an emergency stroke assessment, which includes a brain scan and if appropriate, provision of the clot busting drug (tPA) and possible interventional removal of clot. tPA can potentially reduce or eliminate the damaging effects of stroke. Once you have been assessed, you may be referred to one or more of the following services. Your health care team will help determine which services are right for you.

Stroke Prevention Clinic – If diagnosed with a mini stroke (TIA) or stroke, your doctor may refer you for further assessment and follow-up at the Stroke Prevention Clinic. Click here to learn more.

Acute Stroke Team –If hospitalized, you will be seen by expert stroke professionals specializing in your stroke recovery. The team includes neurologists, nurse practitioner, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, dietitians, speech language pathologists, pharmacists and stroke nurse educator.

Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit – The Rehabilitation and Restorative Care Program is for individuals who need help in regaining independence before returning home or to the community. The program is offered at Brightshores Health System in the Owen Sound Hospital. Active rehabilitation helps you begin your journey towards achieving your highest possible physical, mental and social functioning. Click here for more information.

Community Stroke Rehabilitation Team – After discharge from hospital, you may need the ongoing support and therapy that this team can provide in combination with the Community Care Access Centre.  After a stroke there is a critical three-month window in which to provide rehabilitation to ensure you have the best possible recovery. These teams will come to your home to provide rehabilitation services.
